Today the Marlins defeated the Mets by a score of 6-4.
- Dillon Gee started for the Mets, and didn't allow any runs in three innings pitched.
- John Buck hit a three run home run in the third inning.
- Kirk Nieuwenhuis left the game early with an apparent knee injury after attempting to steal second base.
My Take: Dillon Gee really looked solid this year, and the team is going to need him to have a big year in order to make up for the loss of R.A. Dickey. Hopefully he continues to get better as the spring progresses. As for Buck, we know that he has some pop to his bat, and he has shown that so far. This was his second home run of the spring, and it is nice to finally see some solid offensive production out of the catcher's position.
As for Nieuwenhuis, he just simply cannot catch a break. After burning out at the end of last season, he has had a few bad injuries, and this one looks like it could be serious. The team is calling it a bad bruise, but considering that he couldn't walk, I would have to believe that it has to be some kind of structural damage to the knee. Unfortunately those injuries do not heal overnight. This could open the gate for some other guys to make the team, such as Matt den Dekker. den Dekker is defensively as good as you can get, but his production at the plate is below-average. Hopefully he puts up a strong showing this spring and wins the job.
