Kirk Nieuwenhuis underwent an MRI for his knee on March 4th, and the test showed that he had a slight bone bruise in his knee. Nieuwenhuis left Sunday's game against the Marlins with the knee injury that initially seemed very serious.
When I first saw the injury, I initially thought that it was going to be some kind of structural damage, given that he couldn't walk and had to be carted off the field. So, this is actually good news, because he will probably be forced to miss only 3-5 games. Nieuwenhuis, in my mind, is still not a lock to make this team, despite his success last season. At the end of 2012, he started to slow down a bit and showed his weaknesses as a hitter. Hopefully, for his sake, he comes back from this injury and starts to hit. He is 1-for-18 so far this spring, and hasn't done anything to prove that he belongs at the big league level. For now, we'll get to see more from Matt den Dekker and Collin Cowgill, both of whom have very good chances to make this team. It will certainly be interesting to see how this plays out, because the entire outfield is basically up for grabs at the moment.
